The opening session was very special for me since a storekeeper from my facility (Lansing Correctional Facility, Kansas) received the ACA Award of Valor. On July 3, 2007 Lionel Barley went to the aid of fellow storekeeper Pam Bonner. Pam was being assaulted by a knife-wielding inmate and was sustaining life threatening injuries. Lionel forced his way into the barricaded office and was able to disarm the inmate and restrain him while Ms. Bonner was taken for medical help.
During the time Lionel was disarming the inmate, he received severalserious cuts and an injury to his back. After two surgeries Lionel was able to return to work. On accepting the award, Lionel expressed hisadmiration of Pam and her bravery, perseverance, and tenacity in overcoming her injuries to return to work.
